Our Technical Products Unit delivers functional and performance driven products to diverse markets such as Medical, Filtration, Footwear/Apparel, Vinyl Coated Substrates, Roofing Substrates, Geotextiles, and Residential/Commercial Furnishings. Using the variety of fiber producing technologies that we own, (blending capabilities with purchased fibers such as rayon and polypropylene, needling techniques, finishing, and chemical treatments), we are able to engineer the fabric’s physical properties for ease of conversion necessary for the end product to be successful. Unique properties that can be engineered into our nonwovens include directional strength & elongation, density, shrinkage ability and resistance, fire retardancy, and chemical and microbial resistance.
Gauze pads, alcohol swabs, face wipes, facemasks, bandage wraps, and mattress pads, are some of the applications served by Foss fabrics. For example, we can mix our own silver based, Fosshield® fiber into functional blends that provide antimicrobial fabrics that possess proven results in inhibiting the growth of hundreds of strains of bacteria and fungus. With more emphasis now being placed on health and safety, Fosshield® fabrics will play a significant role in our generation’s quest for a health conscious attitude and environment for years to come.
Using our internally produced specialty fibers, Foss is able to bring specialty products to the filtration industry. By controlling fiber characteristics such as denier, finish, and cross-section, we can create high performance fabrics for filtration purposes. We can inhibit the growth of a variety of mildew and fungus’ to add benefits to the filtration market by adding in our Fosshield® antimicrobial fibers. In procession of a wide variety of fabric post finishing operations such as coating, calendering, and singeing, tight tolerances can be achieved for this specification-oriented industry.
Foss entered into the nonwovens market in the late 1950’s when we incorporated a nonwoven as the substrate to be treated for footwear applications such as box toes and heel counters. Foss continues to create products that withstand the wear characteristics necessary for the foundations in shoes by using a variety of saturants and sheet-extruded films, which are produced in house. Light weight, yet durable products allow for many uses in athletic footwear for today’s athletes as well as for our military, where “soldier comfort” is paramount. The use of our Fosshield® technology in footwear applications helps eliminate odor, fungus, and other unwanted aspects in shoes. These registered trademarks: Stytherm, Styplast, and Fossflex, are the hallmark components used by many major brands.
Nonwoven features inherently provide insulation, moisture management, and controlled breathability for a variety of garment applications. Uses range from high-tech interlining arrangements for sports apparel, to shoulder pads and under collar material for suits and sport jackets.
Vinyl Coated Substrates
Foss developed the first nonwoven substrate for vinyl coated applications in automotive seating and rooftops. By combining our internal fiber manufacturing capability with our history and relationships in the foam market, we can provide a supported substrate with stretch and set properties to meet the specific requirements of this marketplace. For example, we can incorporate Fosshield® antimicrobial fibers into the finished product to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew for end uses in the marine industry. Adding Flame retardancy and water repellency can also heighten the value of the vinyl product to meet stringent industry requirements in transportation, institutional bedding, and hospitality environments.
By providing products in a weight range of 3 – 32 ounces per square yard, in a variety of fibers and densities, we can produce a solid substrate for stabilization, spray saturation of required chemistries, water transport, and adhesive compatibility.
Needle-punched nonwovens offer a range of densities that can control soil stabilization; provide line tunnels for water movement; and reduce raw materials needed for drainage systems in roadways and foundations, resulting in cost savings in the thousands.
Technical nonwovens can provide microbial protection, comfort, wearability, noise reduction, fire resistance, and ease of fabrication. Foss supplies roll goods to manufacturers of residential and commercial products such as hotel mattresses, wall boards, acoustic panels, flooring, cubicle panels, commercial seating, and residential upholstery.
